In a funding announcement that took place at CFB Borden in January, the Government of Canada announced approximately $800 million to modernize a fleet of CH-146 Griffon helicopters.

As outlined in Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, the investments will go towards extending the life of the equipment ensuring that the women and men of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) have the functional equipment necessary to carry out the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) missions.

“Through our defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, we are providing the women and men of our Canadian Armed Forces with the equipment they need to do the important work we ask them,”  Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence commented. “A tactical transport helicopter capability is absolutely critical to the success of the full range of military operations. With these upgrades, we are ensuring that our military can continue to rely on this proven helicopter for years to come.”

Phase one of this life extension is the definition phase, during this phase the original equipment manufacturer, Bell Helicopter Textron Canada Ltd., will develop changes to design in order to upgrade the helicopter’s cockpit displays, integrated sensory systems, engines and avionics systems.

The Griffon helicopter, is essential to CAF operations fulfilling number of functions including escort and surveillance, reconnaissance, tactical troop transport, casualty evacuation, disaster relief, special operation aviation support and search and rescue.
