The final 15 meter section of the former HMCS Preserver was dismantled in December, concluding an 18-month effort to dispose of the ship.

With nearly 1.4 million parts and 8,400 controlled goods certificates verified and catalogued, the storied life of the Preserver came to an end with the issuance of her final Certificate of Demilitarization on December 12, 2018.

Preserver’s disposal is part of a larger disposal program managed by Director Maritime Equipment Program Management (Non-Combatants). In recent years, the disposal team has coordinated and witnessed the disposal of the former HMCS Protecteur, Algonquin, Iroquois, CFAV Quest, and is currently managing disposal activities for the former HMCS Athabaskan and several auxiliary vessels, including a fuelling barge, a deperming barge, and a dive tender (Granby).

The disposal team also works closely with the Materiel Group’s Director Supply Chain Operations (DSCO) to commemorate the service of our former ships by establishing monuments such as the Iroquois bow that will soon be displayed at NDHQ (Carling) and the Iroquois propellers that were donated to the town of Sorel, Quebec, where the ship was built.
