Veterans’ Week, from November 5 to 11, honours the Veterans and Canadian Armed Forces members who have served Canada and remembers those who died in its service. We are extremely fortunate to live freely in this wonderful country thanks to them. This sentiment is reflected in the Veterans’ Week Our Freedom vignette, a key component to Veterans Affairs Canada’s remembrance campaign across multiple social media platforms and on television.

This Veterans’ Week, the theme is the 75th anniversary of the Italian Campaign, which was a key milestone in the lead up to the end of the Second World War. More than 93,000 Canadians served with the Allied forces during this campaign as they fought their way across Sicily and mainland Italy. Nearly 6,000 were killed. We remember the service and sacrifices of those who fought and died during this bitter struggle.

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces continue to follow in the footsteps of those brave Canadians in uniform who served to protect Canada’s freedoms. This week, communities across the country will be holding hundreds of commemorative and educational events in which Canadians can participate.

Take a moment to reflect on our freedom and participate in remembrance. Throughout Veterans’ Week, there are various methods to show that #CanadaRemembers:

1. Participate in a ceremony at your local cenotaph or other war memorial;

2. Wear a poppy with pride;

3. Join the conversation on social media! Use the acts of remembrance to post what remembrance means to you, and include the Veterans’ Week hashtags #CanadaRemembers and #Italy75;

4. Explore stories of those who served and sacrificed for our country by reading Faces of Freedom profiles; and

5. Learn more about those who have served our country through Heroes Remember videos of Veterans sharing their experiences.

Visit veterans.gc.ca/CanadaRemembers for more ways to get involved. You can also check out the Veterans Affairs Canada Calendar of Events to find information on ceremonies taking place in your local community over the next week.

This year, let’s show that #CanadaRemembers.
