Hello, I’m Jody Thomas, Deputy Minister of National Defence.

It’s the launch of the National Defence Workplace Charitable Campaign (NDWCC). I’m joined today by Campaign Champion, Assistant Deputy Minister (Public Affairs) Chris Henderson.

We all know someone who has benefitted from the more than 86 500 registered charities across Canada. Last year, Defence Team members raised over $3.5M nationally for the campaign.

As we mark the launch of the National Defence Workplace Charitable Campaign, it’s useful to reflect on why we give, and how our contributions can make a difference.

As children of veterans, and as veterans ourselves, we know that veterans’ issues matter.

This year, the campaign will focus on charities who work on veterans’ homelessness.

No one organization, or group, or level of government can successfully tackle the issue. We need a community-centered approach to make a positive difference.

By actively supporting this year’s charitable campaign, National Defence will be a key part of that effort.

A Veteran’s connection to the military and Veteran community can be very important. In some cases, Veterans transition into life after service more successfully when they are surrounded and supported by other Veterans who share their lived experiences.

Mental health is an important issue in the Veteran population. The stigma surrounding mental health issues is also strong in this population. Not everyone feels comfortable asking for, or receiving support. That’s all the more reason to keep offering support, and keep battling the stigma at the same time.

Be sure to check out the NDWCC intranet page for information on how to donate and be part of our community effort to address Veterans’ homelessness.

There will be launch events taking place across the organization. We encourage you to take part and come together with your colleagues in support of the NDWCC.
