North Glengarry pays tribute to veterans with Remembrance Day Banner Campaign
Alexandria, November 6, 2019
On November 11, we observe a moment of silence to honour the courage, valour and sacrifice of the heroes who have served – and continue to serve – Canada during times of war and conflict.
In Remembrance of these veterans and soldiers, the Township of North Glengarry commissioned twenty “Lest We Forget” utility pole banners that hung throughout North Glengarry during the days leading up to November 11.
Significo was commissioned to create the banners, which bear the image of a Canadian Armed Forces soldier playing the bagpipes at sunset, as our nation’s flag was being lowered. This iconic image speaks volumes and we think it will strike a chord with our residents. The image was supplied by Canada’s Department of National Defence and it was paired with a field of poppies – the enduring symbol of Remembrance.
The idea to create these banners was first proposed by North Glengarry Councillor Brenda Noble and a group of residents from Dalkeith. It quickly gained the support of Council.
The Alexandria Legion Branch 423 has confirmed that they will be partnering with the municipality for the second wave of banners, which will be rolled out in 2020. Township staff will be working with the Alexandria Legion and the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Army Reserve Unit on the second phase of this project.
“This is a unique way for our community to ensure that our veterans are not forgotten and to show our respect and gratitude for the sacrifices they have made,” said North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald.
