Today, December 10, is Human Rights Day and as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are reminded that we have come a long way but still have further to go before equality can be achieved worldwide.

Eleanor Roosevelt asked: “Where, after all, do universal human rights begin?”

And her answer was “In small spaces, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world.”

If human rights begin in small spaces, then they grow and strengthen as we stand together over time.

The first principle of defence ethics is respect the dignity of all persons. It is the foundational element of everything we do here at the Defence Team and, by standing together, we can be the change that is required for us to be even more inclusive and equitable.
