Hunters Invest $300 Mln/Year in Saskatchewan, StarPhoenix Says
TheGunBlog.ca — Hunters invest about $300 million a year into the Saskatchewan economy, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix newspaper reported today, citing a government minister.
The spending includes more than $8.8 million on hunting licences, $40 million on hunting outfitters and others in the industry, and the bulk to gas stations, restaurants, hotels, sporting-goods stores and other local businesses, the paper said on its website, citing Minister of Trade and Export Development Jeremy Harrison.
The economic boost comes mainly from gun owners in Saskatchewan, the rest of Canada and the U.S., the paper said. Government estimates show 23,000 Americans went to the province to hunt last year, the newspaper reported.
The Saskatoon Wildlife Federation has doubled in size in recent years as women, immigrants and youth get into hunting and sport shooting, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix said, citing Robert Freberg, the federation’s president.
Today’s article includes interviews with hunters and is the first in a series of reports and videos with the Regina Leader-Post, Lines of Fire: Guns in Saskatchewan.
