More than 120 sea, army and air cadets from across Canada gathered at CFB Esquimault May 5-9 for the 45^th National Cadet Marksmanship Championship. Cadets traveled from as far North as Arctic Bay, NU and as far East as Conception Bay, NFLD.

“The highlight of this week was being able to see a different side of Canada as well as being able to learn new skills from other competitors,” says Diana Taha from 53 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Summerside, PEI, “this was an experience I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Because of the support from CFb Esquimault and Maritime Forces Pacific, the cadets had unique experiences such as touring HMCS Calgary, firing C7 rifles on the SAT Trainer and tours on the water in Esquimalt Harbour. They also toured historic Fort Rodd Hill, Hatley Castle, the Royal BC Museum and downtown Victoria.

The National Cadet Marksmanship Championship is the highest level of competition in a sport that teaches safety, focus and stress calming techniques, as well as teamwork and leadership. Each team of five consists of at least two junior cadets under the age of 15. Throughout the week, cadets shot relays in both the prone and standing positions using Daisy 853C air rifles. The cadets with the top ten cumulative scores competed in a fun and interactive finals shoot while their teammates cheered them on. Prizes were awarded for individual, team and aggregate scores.
