Lieutenant-General Coates. I’m the Deputy Commander of NORAD.

Alright, we’re here today in the NORAD and NORTHCOM Command Centre.

We’re really the nerve centre of both commands, NORAD and NORTHCOM, where all the information comes together, gets processed, and big decisions are made and flow through here to ensure the defence of North America in the safety of our citizens.

And this is the 60 Seconds Challenge.

1. Any words about NORAD’s 60th birthday?

Yeah, the 60 is the new 40 and we are going to reinvent.

2. What is your favourite thing about America?

I get a lot of chances to spend time outdoors, recreating.

3. Coffee or tea?

Milk.

4. What messages do you have for junior leaders?

We can all make a change. What’s yours?

5. What has been your proudest moment as an RCAF Officer?

Leading the Afghanistan Air Wing and making it safe for Canadians on the ground.

6. What is the most interesting thing you have learned about the US since becoming Deputy Commander of NORAD?

Our country is big, busy and complex.

7. What does it mean to be a Deputy Commander by National Command?

It’s a great honour to be representing Canada in this organization with our closest defence partner.

8. What do both Canada and US military share in common?

We really value our people. People are the number 1 thing.

9. Who has been the most influential person in your life and career?

Probably my father.
