TheGunBlog.ca — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau officially instructed Bill Blair, the new minister of organized-crime reduction, to study a “full ban on handguns and assault weapons in Canada, while not impeding the lawful use of firearms by Canadians.”

Trudeau sent Blair his mandate letter dated today outlining his objectives as minister. One of the priorities included:

“Support the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness on the passage of Bill C-71, and work together on additional policy, regulations or legislation that could reduce crime involving the use of firearms and keep Canadians safe. You should lead an examination of a full ban on handguns and assault weapons in Canada, while not impeding the lawful use of firearms by Canadians.”

Some people regard any magazine-fed, semi-automatic rifle or shotgun as an “assault weapon.” Automatic firearms have been off-limits to most Canadians for decades.

The government said in presenting Bill C-71 that it aimed for fair treatment of hunters and sport shooters. If passed, the legislation will confiscate more than 10,000 more firearms from their lawful owners and add new restrictions on them. No measure in Bill C-71 is aimed at violent outlaws.

Target shooting is one of Canada’s safest and most-popular sporting activities. More men and women have a firearm Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) than the number who play hockey.

All firearms already are banned from any private individual without a PAL.
